Organization Description:

Ceramic Arts contract Instructor, multiple positions/shifts available and continued on a seasonal basis. Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, located in Deer Lake Park in the City of Burnaby is seeking experienced Ceramic Arts instructors to plan and facilitate ceramic arts programs at the Shadbolt Centre and at our satellite ceramics studio at Christine Sinclair Community Centre (3713 Kensington Avenue, Burnaby).

Job Description:

Students will vary in age based on the type of class being taught, but will primarily be children and youth (ages 4-18). The studio at Christine Sinclair Community Centre is strictly for handbuilding and sculpture, whereas the studios at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts include pottery wheels. The types of classes that may be taught are: Clayworks (4-5 years), Clayworks (6-8 years), Clayworks (9-12 years), Teen Clay (13-18 years), and Adult Handbuilding (18+). Lessons may cover but are not limited to the following topics: pottery basics, sculpting with clay, handbuilding, extruding, slab-rolling, coiling, trimming, assembling, surface decoration techniques, and glazing. Ceramic Arts Instructors are expected to develop a series of foundational projects for students while also encouraging play, experimentation, and the development of individual creative expression.

Responsibilities:

In consultation with the Ceramic Arts Programmer, plan age-appropriate activities while teaching basic ceramic arts skills. Be flexible with varying student skill levels within each classroom setting. Be adept at classroom management. Good customer service skills an asset when talking with parents of children or youth. Responsibilities may include setting up and cleaning up the studio before and after classes, and preparing ceramic artworks for firing.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a Ceramic specialty or the equivalent in relevant experience is required. Ceramic Arts Instructors require a strong level of self-sufficiency and confidence with the equipment and supplies required in a specialized ceramic studio classroom setting. In order to be an instructor through the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, a minimum of 100 hours of teaching experience as a Ceramic Arts instructor (preferably with children/youth) is required. First aid certificate (First Aid + CPR-C) is a condition of employment for all City of Burnaby instructors.

Remuneration:

$43/hour + 4% in lieu of benefits
