Salt Spring Arts (SSA) is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative executive director with a passion for the arts and good leadership skills. As Salt Spring Island’s arts council our mission is to build and nurture the creative capacity of our community. We support artists, inspire creativity and connect our community through a broad range of accessible, low-barrier programs. Our activities enhance connection, inclusion, participation, celebration and economic vibrancy in our community. Our work includes advocacy and collaborations to support cultural development. We operate out of and manage historic Mahon Hall as a community cultural centre.

Job Description:
The Executive Director must be a progressive, innovative leader and a confident spokesperson who is responsible for executing the overall mission and management of the organization. The ED is familiar with the non-profit sector and is responsible for directing the ongoing and day-to-day operations. The ED, of their own initiative, will advance the organization’s goals and objectives through sustainable operational plans as outlined in the 2023 – 2027 strategic plan. They will advise the Board of opportunities and obstacles to achieving the goals and objectives of the organization.
They are answerable to the Board and work with the Board Chair, the Executive, and Committees on a regular basis. In addition, they are committed to developing and maintaining productive relationships with Board Committees, local government authority, the local community of artists, funders, volunteers and other key stakeholders, including those in other parts of British Columbia and Canada. The ED supervises employees, contract and other staff and may delegate supervision of staff to committees or other staff as appropriate.
Responsibilities:
1. Leadership:
- Advance the direction of the organization, ensuring its continued relevance to the community;
- Maintain a positive, healthy, inclusive and safe work environment;
- Guide the implementation of the strategic and annual plans as approved by the board;
- Review and develop operational procedures as needed;
- Advise board of all Human Resource needs and undertaking all processes to hire staff on the Board’s direction;
- Inform the Board in a timely fashion of statutory and policy requirements existing in law or in the policies and procedures of SSA;
- Identify grant opportunities of relevance to SSA current projects and future goals;
- Responsible for management of Mahon Hall;
- Research, develop and advise the Board of new program initiatives.
2. Communications and Community Relations:
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships within the community (both within the arts community and elsewhere);
- Oversee and coordinate effective communication tools and strategies for Salt Spring Arts to maximize our impact. These include managing the website & social media; communication, plus promotions and advertising, publishing a regular newsletter and an annual report prior to the AGM;
- Maintain regular contact with Program volunteers and direct Staff to improve; coordination and planning, and to maximize impact of advertising, sponsorship, facility use.
3. Administrative Duties:
- Work with staff to maintain, improve and/or develop systems to manage SSA record-keeping and communications including but not limited to: records of Board meetings, policy and procedures, digital photo library, memberships, financial records;
- Direct and manage all staff, oversee training, and perform regular performance reviews;
- Oversees the recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers;
- General Office tasks: answer phones, emails and in-person inquiries to support members and the general public.
4. Fiscal Management:
- Develop annual budgets and regularly review financial status of programs in relation to annual budget;
- Ensure financial records accurately reflect programming reality and organizational needs;
- Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting to the Board;
- Manage the relationship with the Board-appointed Financial Reviewer (Accountant) and takes direction from the Financial Reviewer to ensure conformity with sound accounting procedures;
- Manage all aspects of grant preparation, submissions and reporting, communicate with funding bodies, project budgeting, project oversight, and submit reports as required;
- Maintain effective relationships with current sponsors and partners, and development of new ones.
5. Programming:
- Within the context of active consultation with committees and public hall users, and having the building lease in mind, oversees the scheduling and use of Mahon Hall;
- Develop the annual programming plan in consultation with relevant program committees. Oversee the planning, budgeting, implementation and reporting of all annual programs and activities; including oversight of program staff and hiring occasional contractors.
6. Board Support:
- Carry out directives of the Board;
- Provide support to the Board and work with volunteers to coordinate regular Annual General and Special meetings, strategic sessions, Board training, and by preparing timely reports and support materials
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Knowledge of the arts in British Columbia and Canada
- Strong financial management skills
- Ability to provide effective leadership to oversee and motivate SSA staff and volunteers
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks
- Proficiency with standard office software applications
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Ability to adapt

- Proven experience in successful fundraising
- Experience in public relations
- Outstanding interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent public speaking skills
