Notes from the Alliance's Pre-Election Call to Action
/On December 6, 2016, the BC Alliance for Arts + Culture hosted a pre-election advocacy event in Vancouver. This emerged as part of the Alliance's ask for the provincial government to double the budget of the BC Arts Council over the next three years with an immediate investment of $8.1 million — to bring provincial funding on par with other Canadian provinces. Invitees were asked to discuss the situation around arts and culture funding in British Columbia, using the following questions as a guide:
- Why does BC's arts and cultural sector need increased investment from the provincial government?
- What are the priority areas for increased funding? How could increased funds best be used or allocated?
- How would an increase to the BC Arts Council change the situation of artists and arts organizations in BC?
- How would increased investment in arts and culture bring changes in terms of healthier communities, job creation and elevated global presence for BC's cultural sector?
We'd like to thank all participants for the spirited conversation that resulted! If you weren't able to make it in person, or you'd like a reminder of the ideas generated, please click here to read the discussion notes.
The Alliance looks forward to bringing these ideas to our Ministers and their staffs in our capacity as your voice for arts and culture in British Columbia. Stay tuned for more news on our advocacy efforts as we look ahead to the provincial election in May!
