Call for Artists Description:
The Reach invites proposals for the second installment in its outdoor banner art series, Inside/Out, which will be on view from Spring 2025 to early 2026.
Inside/Out2 will be presented in conjunction with Parallax: Reimagining the Canada-US Border, a transhistorical and interdisciplinary exhibition that will reframe the western Canada-US border between the Juan de Fuca Strait and the Rocky Mountains as a visual invention of the settler-colonial imaginary. Through the presentation of recent and newly commissioned works of contemporary art that contend with the natural, cultural, and geopolitical disruptions caused by the demarcation of the border in dialogue with historic photographs, drawings, artifacts, and documents, Parallax will prompt audiences living in proximity to the 49th parallel to reflect on how the border and its attendant settler-colonial power structures shape their experiences.
Artists invested in diachronic explorations of the history and live experience of borders, in the broadest sense, are invited to submit works for consideration for Inside/Out2. In this context, land and aquatic borders can be taken to refer to the limits of territorial sovereignty in the geopolitical sense or, more broadly, spaces of liminality between, or on the edges of, conceptual worlds. Both Indigenous and settler perspectives are welcome, with an emphasis on ‘minor’ histories that offer valuable nuance to mainstream knowledge of, and attitudes towards, borders and boundaries. The submission of projects that focus on the history of Black migration from San Francisco to Victoria in 1858 and its contemporary legacy (including visual engagements with Wayde Compton’s poetry), is particularly encouraged. Another geohistorical context of potential interest might be the Alaskan border dispute of c. 1898 (relevant archival materials are held at the McMaster University Library: https://library.mcmaster.ca/klondike-gold-rush-alaskan-border-dispute-1896-1903).
Original and born-digital creative responses to the present call are encouraged; however, submissions of existing works, suitable for presentation in printed banner format, are also welcome.
