The Gulf of Georgia Cannery, built in 1894 in the historic village of Steveston, is a living monument to the people involved in BC’s fishing industry. The National Historic Site is operated by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, a non-profit society. Collaborating with Parks Canada, the Society preserves the history of the BC fishing industry and presents it in an engaging and relevant way.

Job Description:

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Visitor Experience Manager is responsible for the delivery of a wide range of offers for visitors to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site. As a confident and inclusive leader, this role is integral to guiding staff on how to provide the best experience for visitors through our tours, programs, events and other amenities.

Responsibilities:

Manage the hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of all heritage interpretive staff.

Supervise and direct work of the Visitor Services Coordinator.

Responsible for distribution and monitoring of applicable policies and procedures, cash management and associated reporting.

Accountable for the strategic allocation and planning of Visitor Services staff time and resources.

Accountable for the historic site operation including, opening and closing procedures, and maintaining gallery readiness.

Coordinates with the Curatorial Program Manager to deliver tours, events and public programs.

Coordinates staff involvement in the care and maintenance of exhibits with the Collections and Exhibits Manager.

Coordinates with the Senior Operations Manager to ensure staff are familiar with Gift Shop product and procedures.

Maintains an updated knowledge of the Cannery and the local area.

Ensures that visitor offerings are available in both official languages, English and French.

Delivers when needed, visitor experience content, special interest programs. tours and programs.

Ensures excellent customer service and responds to visitor complaints and comments.

Implements and continuously improves systems, standards, and processes related to the delivery of visitor services.

Maintains a positive working relationship and open lines of communication with other departments.

Develops and maintains strong relationships and positive communications with staff and relevant groups including visitors, members, volunteers, and community organizations.

Participates in regular staff meetings.

Attends conferences, seminars and external meetings as required.

Participates in special events as required.

Skills:

Bachelor’s degree or certificate in heritage interpretation, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

2+ years of experience leading staff and/or volunteers within heritage, museum or the arts and culture sector.

Experience serving the public and children is required.

Exceptional record keeping, organization, logistical planning, and communication skills.

Fluent in English. French language is an asset.
