Board of Directors
/Organization:
Realwheels Theatre
Deadline:
Jun. 30, 2025
Organization Description:
Realwheels Theatre creates and produces performances that deepen conversations about D/disability, exploring identity, agency, and belonging.
We create disability-led work in which D/disability itself is often not the focus but the landscape upon which we explore universal issues. Our projects challenge stereotypes and resist expected narratives, push boundaries, and ask critical questions. We build community, creating spaces where emerging and experienced artists alike can share stories that need to be heard.
We commit to growing the canon of plays written by artists with D/disabilities via the development of new work. We seek to explore innovative new forms including audio, video, and interdisciplinary art. We prioritize accessibility not only as necessary, but as creatively generative.

Volunteer Opportunity Description:
Realwheels Theatre is seeking engaged members for our Board of Directors. We want to strengthen our ability to combine theatrical excellence with a commitment to D/disability representation. If you’re passionate about the performing arts, or have lived experience of D/disability (or both!) we want to hear from you.
Realwheels strongly values diversity and fosters an equitable and inclusive work and volunteer environment. Our volunteer board currently consists of members from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences; from law to healthcare to marketing, we welcome all interested individuals to apply. We particularly encourage applications from members of equity-seeking or under-represented groups. As a D/disability-led company, we strongly encourage those who live with or self-identify with D/disability to let us know of your access needs.
Responsibilities:
Board members typically serve a three-year term. The board meets approximately bi-monthly and is actively engaged in articulating and supporting the company’s strategic planning. Beyond board meetings, members are occasionally asked to sit on board committees and participate in fundraising initiatives.
As part of the Societies Act, all board members must reside in B.C. It is also important for members to be able to attend in-person RW meetings and events in Vancouver, so we will be prioritizing applications from those living in the Lower Mainland.
Qualifications:
SOME QUALITIES WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
- A pragmatic yet imaginative mindset, with a strong interest in cultural philanthropy within our sector;
- Big picture thinking, with ability to recognize priorities;
- Willingness to roll up your sleeves, join the team, and help us reach our objectives; and
- Skills in capacity building, marketing, grant-writing, strategic planning, fundraising, and/or events (assets)
- Experience or familiarity with the Vancouver theatre industry, non-profit boards, art boards, the BC Societies Act, and/or the D/disability community (assets)
WE OFFER:
- A meaningful board experience and an opportunity for enrichment
- Insight and direct connection to the performing arts
- Engagement with the D/disability community
