Job Description:

We are seeking a passionate and organized Full-Time Gallery Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a background in the arts, either through experience or studies, and be fluent in English. This role requires someone confident in engaging with the public and fostering open conversations about contemporary art.

This position is funded under the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage internship program. An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:
• are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
• are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
• are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
• are a college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate).

Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs and that are unemployed or underemployed.

Work Schedule: Wednesday - Saturday, 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM; Sunday, 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Responsibilities:

● Assist with the daily operations of the gallery, including opening and closing.
● Provide excellent customer service and answer visitor inquiries in person, via phone calls, and through email.
● Offer information on current exhibitions, artists, and CICA’s mission.
● Assist with exhibition preparation, including installations and takedowns.
● Support the execution of gallery events such as workshops, panel talks, live shows, and opening receptions.
● Engage visitors in discussions about the art and the gallery’s programs, provide guided tours as needed.
● Contribute to marketing effort by creating social media posts, email communications, monitoring and replying to customer inquiries on social media platforms.
● Assist with inventory management, sales, and gallery communications.
● Help maintain gallery spaces and ensure proper organization of inventory.
● Assist with volunteer coordination, communication and onboarding.
● Keep track of office supplies and order essential supplies in a timely manner.
● Oversee gallery maintenance, including coordinating repairs, pickups, drop-offs, and related logistics.

Qualifications:

● Background in the arts (through studies or experience).
● Complete fluency in English, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
● Comfortable engaging with the public and fostering open conversations.
● Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
● Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
● Availability to work five days a week. Some flexibility in schedule may be required to accommodate special gallery events.
● Ability to lift and move artwork safely (training provided).
● A valid BC Driver’s License and a Serving It Right Certificate are assets.
