The Gulf of Georgia Cannery, built in 1894 in the historic village of Steveston, is a living monument to the people involved in BC’s fishing industry. The National Historic Site is operated by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, a non-profit society. Working in partnership with Parks Canada, the Society preserves the history of the BC fishing industry and presents it in an engaging and relevant way. It is open to the public year-round and welcomes visitors from across the Metro Vancouver and around the world.

Job Description:
We are seeking an outgoing individual to join our front-line Heritage Interpreter team this summer, dedicated to providing exemplary customer service in presenting the site and its history to our visitors.
This is a temporary, full-time position at 36.25 hours a week. Shifts may include weekends and holidays. The position will start on May 5 and will end on September 1. A security screening will be required.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Visitor Services Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
• Performing front desk duties, including greeting visitors, responding to visitor enquiries, and
conducting admission and Cannery Store transactions
• Delivering tours and non-educational programs
• Providing ongoing feedback on tours, educational programs and visitors services
• Assisting with the delivery of special events
• Wearing costumes as required
• Maintaining updated knowledge of the Cannery, local attractions and other items of interest to
visitors
• Answering the front desk phone and taking messages in a professional manner
• Assisting with ongoing cleaning and maintenance in and around the Cannery, including public
washrooms
• Operating A/V equipment as required in exhibits or for rentals and programs
• Assisting with projects including restocking store merchandise, development of activities for
school programs and special events, and others as required
• Assisting with social media postings as required
• Reporting visitor concerns or safety issues to supervisor in a timely manner
• Participating in staff meetings and group training opportunities when offered
• Represent the Cannery at outreach events as needed
• Other duties as required and directed by the Visitor Services Manager or Visitor Services
Coordinator.
• Participate in the following training program
o Visitor Services, cash handling and till procedures
o Heritage Interpretation
o Exhibit and historical familiarization
o Observing and peer mentored delivery of programs and specialized tours
o Historical information on Steveston
o Emergency and security procedures
o Open and closing procedures
o Tours of other local or mission related attractions
o First Aid (as required)
Qualifications:
Qualities:
• You are a motivated team player who has the ability to work independently
• You want to develop your interpersonal and communication skills
• You are dedicated to building diversity, inclusivity and fostering reconciliation within our sector
Skills & Experience:
• Excellent customer service skills; public speaking experience an asset
• Fluency in English is required; fluency in French a strong asset
• Previous experience working with children an asset
• Experience working with volunteers is an asset

Remuneration:
Hourly wage is $19.06, plus 6% in lieu of vacations.
