Preventing Legal Pitfalls: Law and Governance Boot-camp for Non-Profits in the Performing Arts Sector
/Non-profit cultural organizations can run into legal challenges as a result of systems and practises in place that are not aligned with legislated policy or regulations. Sometimes it is challenging to know when legal advice is needed or what type of legal guidance is required to properly address an issue. This workshop aims to provide foundational knowledge and capacity to identify, plan for, and respond to legal issues that can arise in the management of a non-profit organization.
What participants will learn:
- Good practises in the areas of governance, employment, leasing/purchasing property, and privacy in order to mitigate the risk of legal situations
- Knowledge of how lawyers and the legal system address legal issues
- Relevant legislation governing non-profit and charitable organizations
- Strategies for risk management
Through real life case studies, hands-on exercises, instructor, and peer learning, participants will gain a good understanding of the proper structures and systems required to run a non-profit and reduce the risk of legal challenges.
This workshop is open to twenty-four leaders (staff Director or a Board member) of City of Vancouver grantees in the performing arts sector (one representative per organization). PLUS — up to twelve organizations who complete the workshop and who are in need of further legal consultation, will be eligible for a one-hour follow-up meeting with Martha Rans at ALO to address specific legal issues, at no cost.
