New Head of Visual Arts at Canada Council

Former Director of Artexte in Montreal, Sylvie Gilbert will be the new Head of Visual Arts at the Canada Council for the Arts, effective February 18.

Ms. Gilbert‚s 25-year career has been committed to developing and expanding the exhibition and promotion of contemporary visual arts in Canada. As Director at Artexte, she advanced their mandate of supporting the experimental, innovative, and critical nature of contemporary visual art. Ms. Gilbert has worked as senior curator with the Walter Phillips Gallery and at the Banff International Curatorial Institute and was director/curator of the Gallery at the Saidye Bronfman for the Arts in Montreal.

This appointment marks a return to the Council for Ms. Gilbert, who worked as program officer in the visual and media arts sections early in her career. She holds a master of arts in media studies from Concordia University. Her diverse interests and decades of national and international experience are assets that she will bring working with the visual arts community and to the Canada Council.
