Four New Cultural Grant Opportunities

City of Vancouver Cultural Services has announced details of four opportunities to access or participate in the City's cultural grant process.

1.  New deadline for Cultural Grants Program
November 2nd, 2009
Please note: there will only be ONE funding deadline for 2010.

The Cultural Grants program is intended to support a range of artistic and cultural activity including literary, visual, media, dance, theatre, music, multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, Aboriginal, and community-based arts, reflecting different historic cultural traditions as well contemporary art forms and practices.

The program provides grants to support ongoing annual activity through Operating assistance as well as one-time or time-limited initiatives through Project assistance.

For more information including eligibility, assessment criteria and application process please refer to the Cultural Grants Program Information Guide for 2010  available online at http://vancouver.ca/commsvcs/cultural/gasp/grants/InfoGuide.htm or contact staff at Cultural Services at 604.871.6434.

2. Opportunity for New and Emerging Groups for Theatre Rental Grants
Deadline: November 2nd, 2009

This program is intended to ensure accessibility to the Civic Theatres for new and emerging arts and cultural organizations and particularly those from Vancouver's diverse communities. It seeks to support groups that have the capacity to attract large audiences and can benefit from the experience of performing in a centrally located and well-equipped theatre by contributing to their artistic development, increasing their profile, and helping them expand their audiences.

Theatre Rental grants offer financial assistance to off-set the costs of venue rental, to non-profit arts and cultural organizations that would like to present events in one of the Civic Theatres; the Orpheum, Vancouver Playhouse, or Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

This is an opportunity for groups who are interested in using the Civic Theatres and have not used them before or have occasionally used them in the past. This is not for regular users of the civic theatres or those who already receive Operating or Project assistance from the City through Cultural Services.

For more information see the specific criteria and application process for occasional users and new groups available on line at http://vancouver.ca/grants or contact staff at Cultural Services at 604.871.6434.

3.  Call for Nominations for Assessment Committee Members for Cultural Grants
Deadline: November 9th, 2009

The City of Vancouver/Cultural Services invites nominations from the community to assist staff in the adjudication process for Cultural Grants. This is a great opportunity to have input into, and learn more about, the assessment process used by Cultural Services.

The role of the Assessment Committee is to evaluate applications from proponents requesting assistance from the City based upon explicit program criteria. This requires pre-reading applications, participating in Assessment Committee meetings, and arriving at recommendations which will be forwarded to City Council for approval.

Assessment Committee members will be paid an honorarium and must be available to meet for at least 1 to 2 days.

Criteria for consideration of Assessment Committee Members

  • Members will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: theatre, dance, music, festivals, visual arts, media arts, literary arts, Aboriginal arts, community arts, and arts administration.
  • Members will have a thorough understanding of the arts and cultural sector in Vancouver (either through practice or work experience), and have been active members of the Vancouver arts and cultural communities in recent years.
  • Members should not be in a conflict of interest situation with any applicants and must abide by the City's Conflict of Interest Policy and Guidelines.
  • Prior experience on juries or advisory committees is considered an asset.

If you are interested in nominating a peer or participating in this process yourself, complete a nomination form online (http://vancouver.ca) or contact staff at Cultural Services at 604.871.6000 to request a nomination form.

The next Assessment Committee will be assembled to adjudicate the Cultural Grants received for the deadline of November 2nd, 2009 (operating, projects, theatre rental). The Assessment Committee meetings are scheduled to take place between the period of January 11th to 22nd, 2010.

4.  Arts Capacity Grants Fall 2009 - Centre for Sustainability
The Centre for Sustainability is excited and encouraged to announce that the BC Arts Council, the City of Vancouver/Cultural Services and Vancouver Foundation have renewed our former POD grants fund and we are now accepting Letters of Inquiry from arts organizations.

This fall, we recognize that the funding environment calls for capacity grant-making that will even more sharply target the best combination of knowledge and funds that organizations will need to navigate the current period and still accomplish progress toward operating sustainability.
