Alliance Winter Workshop: Arts Organizations and Employment Law
/Date & Time: Tuesday, December 3, 2013 / 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Venue: Alliance Board Room, 100-938 Howe Street, Vancouver
The Workshop: Non-profit cultural organizations can run into legal challenges as a result of systems and practices in place that are not aligned with legislated policy or regulations. Some of the most common challenges arise in the area of employment and human resources management. What are the legal differences between an employee and an independent contractor? What are an organization's responsibilities when hiring or terminating an employee? It can be difficult to know when legal advice is needed or what type of guidance is required to properly address an issue. This workshop aims to provide foundational knowledge and capacity to identify, plan for, and respond to legal issues that can arise.
The Facilitator: Martha Rans is the legal director of Artists' Legal Outreach. She has been practicing law in British Columbia since 1997, and works extensively with arts organizations, not-for-profit societies, and visual and multimedia digital artists.
Cost: Members $45 / Non-members $75 (plus 5% GST)
