Alcuin Society 2014 Book Design Competition
/The Alcuin Society is now accepting submissions for its 33rd national book design competition, The 2014 Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada.
To be eligible, a book must have been published in calendar year 2014 by a Canadian publisher and designed by a Canadian designer. There is no limit to the number of titles you may enter. Entries are welcomed from experienced book designers and design students alike.
Books are judged in the following categories:
- Children’s
- Limited editions
- Pictorial, including exhibition catalogues
- Poetry
- Prose: Fiction
- Prose: Non-Fiction
- Prose: Non-Fiction – Illustrated
- Reference, including how-to, DIY, cooking, travel
Judging is based on the suitability of design concept in relation to the intellectual nature of the content and the intended audiences. Use of colour, type, illustration and photographic styles are also considered. The stock used in the text block, jacket, binding, and overall finish, are judged in the context of the book’s purpose.
First, second and third prizes may be awarded in each category, with honorable mentions included. Winners will be notified prior to the official results announcement. The Awards will be held in Vancouver on April 11, 2015.

The entry fee is $35 per title ($30 for Alcuin Society members). A submission of 5 or more entries is eligible for a discount of 15%.
