Surrey Mayor's Art Awards Winners Announced
/The Surrey Board of Trade announced the winners of the 2017 Surrey Mayor's Art Awards at a ceremony on June 9, with 200 business people, artists, and Mayor of Surrey Linda Hepner in attendance. The winners include:
Arts and Innovation: Surrey Youth Orchestra, for their long history of bringing orchestra music training to children;
Cultural Ambassador: Mohammad Aminul Islam, president of the Mother Language Lovers of the World Society, for working tirelessly to promote and preserve linguistic diversity and cultural heritage within Surrey and throughout British Columbia;
Philanthropy: Westminster Savings Credit Union, for their commitment to increasing access to active living and the arts through their 'Project Better Balance' initiative;
Legacy: Sheila McKinnon, for her work on the Cultural Capital of Canada award programs, the outcomes of which include the Surrey Fusion Festival, six public art installations in Surrey, and the Surrey Civic Treasure Awards.
The award ceremony part of a creative economy dialogue focused on making Surrey a music city destination. Participants discussed the key strategies to grow and strengthen a music economy and the importance of a music city to local businesses.
