Vancouver Civic Theatres Announces ANNEX Theatre Residency Call for Proposals
/The following information is excerpted from a release issued by Vancouver Civic Theatres.
Contemporary Theatre companies in the Lower Mainland have a new opportunity to create, workshop, and produce at the Vancouver Civic Theatres (VCT) owned ANNEX theatre. The new ANNEX Theatre Residency Program will make the ANNEX an incubation ground for creative growth, while also offering much-needed space to local theatre groups.
The residency program offers successfully awarded organizations a 2 year residency at the ANNEX, including funding for 18 performances per year. In addition, organizations will gain access to the Playhouse Theatre Rehearsal Hall to utilize as a development space for up to 5 weeks per year, based on availability.
“This is a an opportunity for growth that can lead to larger scale work at other civic spaces, such as the Playhouse,” said Daniel Arnold, co-producer of local theatre company, Alley Theatre. “One of the questions people always ask is, ‘Where's your theatre?’ Well, it would be wonderful if we had an answer for them.”
Alley Theatre was a 2017 recipient of VCT’s Underutilized Spaces Grant which will help fund their upcoming production, The Ridiculous Darkness, opening November 11th at the ANNEX.
Is there a catch? Sort of – resident companies will need to provide a community outreach or educational component in collaboration with VCT, a request stemming from VCT’s mission to provide accessible arts and culture opportunities in Vancouver
Applications are open until December 4, 2017 and successful candidates will be notified in early January. For eligibility criteria, please see the Vancouver Civic Theatres website.
