Culture Days Issues Call For Ambassadors
/BC Culture Days has announced its 2015 Call for Ambassadors and Awards program.
Each year, BC Culture Days sends a delegate to the annual National Congress on Culture to represent artists and cultural workers from across BC. This Culture Days Ambassador acts as a spokesperson for Culture Days and community mobilizer throughout the year, leading up to the Culture Days weekend at the end of September.
The Culture Days weekend, taking place this year on September 25, 26, and 27, 2015, is a national celebration of arts, culture, and heritage inviting the public “behind-the scenes” to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, and designers at work. The “hands-on” nature of these free activities is meant to inspire and engage the public in their local arts and cultural communities. Last year, 556 free activities were registered across BC including: artist studio and museum tours, dance and music workshops, open theatre rehearsals, collaborative art projects, and much more. “Culture Days is a golden opportunity to showcase our cultural community with a clear message, strong identity and national momentum,” says Liesl Jauk, Manager of Cultural Development and Culture Days coordinator for the City of Richmond.
This year BC Culture Days, along with the Ministry of Community Sport and Cultural Development, invites artists and cultural workers once again to apply for the role of BC Ambassador and will be expanding the program by offering a $2,500 award towards the production of their planned Culture Days event, in addition to the trip to the National Congress in Edmonton. Furthermore, to increase regional representation, up to ten top finalists will be selected as local ambassadors and awarded $1,000 towards the production of Culture Days events in their community.
“Arts and culture bring people together to celebrate life, creativity and community,” said Coralee Oakes, B.C.’s Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. “Every year, BC Culture Days creates opportunities for British Columbians of all ages to experience and enjoy the exciting, inspirational work of artists and arts organizations in communities throughout the province.
The Government of British Columbia is helping to ensure that the event will be a great success again this year by providing funding to support BC Culture Days activities and the BC Culture Days Ambassadors program. I encourage B.C. communities to register their BC Culture Days plans on line at http://www.culturedays.ca”
