Alliance Spring Workshop: Requirements of the new Canada Not-For-Profit Corporations Act
/The Alliance, in partnership with Artists Legal Outreach (ALO), presents a workshop to help federally registered non-profit organizations understand the steps they must take to transition to the new Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act by the October 17, 2014 deadline.
Date & Time: Tuesday, May 6, 2014 / 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.
Venue: Alliance boardroom, 100-938 Howe Street, Vancouver.
The Workshop: The Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act provides federal not-for-profit corporations with a new set of rules that are modern, flexible and better suited to the needs of today's not-for-profit sector. The new rules will replace the old Act which has governed federal corporations for nearly a century.
If your group is federally incorporated, a series of steps MUST be taken no later than October 17 to ensure you are registered and compliant with the new rules. Since the transition could require your organization to write new bylaws and may affect registered charity status, starting the process early is essential. Corporations Canada is authorized to begin the dissolution process for any federally registered not-for-profits that do not make the transition by the required deadline.
This session will guide you through the necessary steps and required documentation to help you be prepared.
Please note: This workshop does not constitute formal legal advice.
Facilitator: Martha Rans is the legal director of Artists' Legal Outreach. She has been practicing law in British Columbia since 1997, and works extensively with arts organizations, not-for-profit societies, and visual and multimedia digital artists.
Cost: Alliance members $45 / non-members $75 (plus 5% GST)
Workshop Registration: Pre-registration and payment is required for all workshops. Cash, VISA, MasterCard or cheques accepted.
