Call for Artists Description:
Devonshire Properties is seeking an experienced mural artist or artist team to create a large-scale outdoor mural at Beach Towers, a high-profile residential complex in Vancouver’s West End. This project offers a unique opportunity to transform a highly visible space along Beach Avenue into a dynamic, engaging work of public art.
Project Overview
● Location: Beach Towers (1600 Beach Avenue, Vancouver, BC)
● Available Wall Space:
○ Section 1: 146 sq. ft. (initial pilot area)
○ Section 2: 908 sq. ft. (potential second phase)
● Theme Considerations:
○ West Coast Landscapes, Nature & Wildlife – Ocean, mountains, forests, and native species such as herons, otters, and orcas, with a focus on the natural beauty surrounding English Bay.
○ Community Spirit & Connection – A celebration of the people, culture, and shared spaces that define the West End’s vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.
○ Vancouver’s Outdoor Culture – Jogging, cycling, rollerblading, kayaking, paddleboarding, and other activities that bring life to Beach Avenue and English Bay.
○ Urban Nature Integration – A blend of city and nature, showcasing how green spaces, waterfront areas, and wildlife coexist within the urban environment.
○ Historical Vancouver – A nod to the area’s past, incorporating elements of local history and the evolution of the West End as a dynamic waterfront community. The successful artist or team will consult with Devonshire Properties to develop the final creative vision for the mural.
Eligibility
● Open to artists from the Lower Mainland and Sea to Sky Corridor (no residency restrictions).
● Applicants must have demonstrated experience with large-scale murals and exterior painting.
● Must be able to complete the mural within the specified timeline.
Responsibilities
● Collaborate with Devonshire Properties to finalize the mural concept.
● Use durable, weather-resistant materials suitable for an outdoor setting.
● Adhere to all safety and site protocols.
● Maintain adequate liability insurance for the duration of the project.
● Complete the mural within the designated timeline.
Compensation & Ownership
● The selected artist or artist team will receive an estimated commission of $3,000 – $6,000, depending on the final scope, complexity, and agreed-upon deliverables.
● Devonshire Properties will own the mural, but the artist will retain creative credit.
● Permits with the City of Vancouver will be handled by Devonshire Properties.
Timeline
● Submission Deadline: April 11, 2025
● Project Timeline: Spring – Summer 2025
● Completion Goal: July 31, 2025
