Vancouver Society of Storytelling

A non-profit organization committed to the Art and Craft of Oral Storytelling

The Vancouver Society of Storytelling (VSOS) is the only not-for-profit and charitable arts organization in B.C. committed to promoting and supporting the ancient and contemporary art of storytelling and its benefits for individuals, families and communities. It offers ongoing programs of events, workshops and an annual festival. The organization also networks with other storytelling groups in the Lower Mainland and beyond in order to pool resources and strengthen services.

The VSOS formally incorporated on Nov. 27, 1991. The Society developed out of a need identified by community members for accessible, interesting storytelling, and out of a commitment to broaden the scope of storytelling in Vancouver in order to reflect this region’s cultural diversity.

As storytellers, we have an exceptional tool for promoting tolerance and understanding, as well as for fostering leadership and communicating vision. A well-told story transmits truth, concept, or idea with immeasurable power. The VSOS is dedicated to connecting this powerful tool with the voices of individuals, organizations, and communities, so that we may all move towards the inclusive society we dream of.

The most effective way to ensure that all the individuals within a group (be it a grassroots volunteer run organization or an international corporation) share common understanding, is to tell stories. Well-told, congruent stories spread like wildfire, driving engagement and creating legacies that fuel organizations for generations.

In its many years of existence the VSOS has undertaken projects, which reflect its goals of presenting diverse, accessible, high quality, entertaining storytelling to the public.
