The Workshop
At the Arts Summit in June, Diana Ragsdale sounded a clarion call: to seize the opportunities presented by today’s crisis in funding and policy, we need to examine our own thinking and expectations, and put our creative powers to use on our own behalf.
While major advocacy actions unite our sector and efforts to address inequities and injustice gain traction, however, daily life presents its own urgencies. For many of us, our art practice is also our employment and the employment of others, and so the impact is immediate and disheartening.
This interactive session will focus on generating practical options for small and medium organizations to help us survive the ‘meantime’, and regain our footing for the future. To paraphrase the inflight direction: where is the ‘oxygen mask’ to keep us alive so we are still here to fight the larger battles?
Facilitator:
Judi Piggott has been working with Canadian artists and cultural workers from all disciplines since 1995, rooting her knowledge of theory, policy and sectoral economic issues solidly in the working lives.
In March 2008 she presented a paper on the economic role of cultural workers in the creative economy at the International Forum on the Creative Economy, for the Conference Board of Canada.
Judi’s lifetime of engagement in community work extends well beyond the arts. She is a member of the BC Social Economy Roundtable, the Voluntary Organizations Consortium of B.C. and the newly-formed Capacity Development Consortium of BC.
