"Could we ever know each other in the slightest without the arts?"

-writer Gabrielle Roy (1903-1983) on the back of the latest $20.00 bill.

Dollar amount that the arts contribute to Canada's economy each year:
$40 billion

In 2003, BC residents spent 67% more on live cultural and performing arts ($120 million) than on live sports event ($75 million).

Arts, culture and heritage employ more than 78,000 people and contribute $4.2 billion annually to the BC economy.

Number of people who attend a live perfomance each year in Canada:
14 million (double the number who attend sporting events)

Since 1991, the City of Vancouver's stated policy objective has been "to ensure our future as a creative city, open and accessible to artists, to the broadest range of artistic expression, and to the widest participation."
